Fit Fat Bioscope Award for Jai

The award carries a Bioscope of filigree work and cash prize


Samal has been recognised for his contributions to AIR, DD and Oriya film industry

He has acted in more than 200 Oriya films


CUTTACK: Noted Oriya film personality Jairam Samal would be honored with this year’s ‘Fit Fat Bioscope Award’ for his extraordinary performance in “comic” roles in Oriya films, dramas, AIR-plays and TV serials. The award instituted by the city-based Home Video Entertainment would be presented to the 59-year-old actor at a glittering function here on December 9, said the Entertainment Group chief Bapu Lenka.

Lenka said the award carries a Bioscope of filigree work costing over Rs 18,000 and cash prize of Rs 25,000. The entertainment group has instituted this award since 2003 to felicitate only film personalities for their contributions to the Oriya cinema.

Eminent film producer and director Parvati Ghosh had received the award in 2004 while actor; director and producer Prashant Nanda received the award in 2005 and music director Swarup Naik received the award last year, Lenka informed. “Samal was selected in recognition to his contributions to all India radio (AIR), Doordarshan and Oriya film industry in particular, Lenka informed.

Fine artiste

Born in 1948, Samal first proved himself as an artiste when he first acted in play for the famous Annapurna theatre at the age of 10. He then became an All India Radio (AIR) artiste in 1959 and started his acting career in Oriya film ‘Stree’ in 1966. Before getting a major breakthrough in the blockbuster Oriya film “Jajabar” in 1976, Samal had acted in more than 150 dramas.

Jajabar made him a superstar overnight for the powerful role he played in it as a comic villain.

Since then Samal, popularly known as Jai Bhai for everybody has acted in more than 200 Oriya films entertaining the people by his unique dialogue delivery skill and peculiar giggle.

He has also given some brilliant performances as villain and characters roles in the films.

His comic audiocassettes that were sold like hot cakes. Till date he has made at least 36 audiocassettes. Samal too has lent his voice for his own songs in the film and his voice had been appreciated in films like “Kala Chakra” and “Singha Vahini”.
