Golden jubilee celebrations of OSA held

Literary festivals in Oriya will be held outside the State

Acclaimed Odissi dancer Swarnaprava Biswasray performing at the golden jubilee celebration in Berhampur on Sunday.

BERHAMPUR: Orissa Sahitya Akademy celebrated its golden jubilee through a cultural function in the city on Sunday.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Berhampur University, Bijay Kumar Sahu, president of the Akademi, Dipak Mishra and its secretary, H.P.P.Patnaik attended the function as guests.

Mr Sahu described the need of more literary activities in Oriya in border areas of the state. The authorities of the Sahitya Akademi said they have already planned up literary activities in Oriya dominated areas of adjoining states.

Literary festivals

The Akademi has planned to hold major literary festivals for Oriyas living outside the State in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Chatisgarh. Apart from it the Akademi would also hold golden jubilee celebrations at four metros of the country.

At this function the secretary of the Akademi declared that they have decided to revive the classic writings of Kavisamrat Upendra Bhanja, Kavi Surya Baldev Rath and Gopalkrushna and print them in attractive editions for the new generations. These poets of south Orissa played a major role in providing Oriya language its distinct identity in the country and the world.

Future

The highlight of the day session of the function was a literary seminar on the future of Oriya literature which was followed by a session of poetry in Oriya language.

Prominent poets from different parts of the State took part in it.

During evening a cultural show was organised where Odissi folk dances to the tunes of traditional Oriya literary lyrics were performed.

It included a performance by eminent Odissi dancer Swarnaprabha Biswasray.

The Akademi has decided to hold similar functions at 13 different places in the State during its golden jubilee year.

At the request of literary personalities of south Orissa president of the Akademi, Dipak Mishra has declared that Paralakhemundi, in Gajapati district would also be the venue for the golden jubilee celebrations of the Akademi.
