Grow mangrove, says experts

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Environmentalists allege Orissa government has not taken any major steps to protect its coastline from erosion and cyclonic storms although SEZs are being planned on the coast.

The coastal areas of Orissa are prone to devastating cyclonic storms. It had faced a super cyclone in 1999. But the authorities seem to have not learnt much from it. According to environmental activist, Prafulla Samantra, the coast line can only be saved by mangrove vegetation which is on decline on the Orissa coastline. Mr Samantra is opposed to establishment of SEZ by Tisco in Ganjam district and the Posco project in Jagatsinghpur district. According to him the state governments have learnt little from cyclones that the coast line of Orissa has faced since 1971.

A special committee had recommended revival of vegetation especially the mangrove variety on the coast line. But the recommendations were not implemented properly.
