BERHAMPUR: Sanjay Memorial Institute of Technology (SMIT), the oldest private technical institute in the State celebrated its silver jubilee on Sunday.

Silver jubilee

Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Chandrasekhar Sahu attended the silver jubilee function as the chief guest and unveiled a newly installed statue of Brundaban Nayak, the founder of the institution at its Ankushpur campus.

The Berhampur MLA, R.C.C.Patnaik and former vice chancellor of Berhampur University, J.K.Baral attended the function as guests. Six meritorious students of Ganjam district from school level to university level were honoured with cash prizes by the Brundaban Nayak Memorial Trust at the function.

This institute was established in 1980 at Ankushpur near the city by late Brundaban Nayak.

Due to some reasons the silver jubilee celebrations were delayed by two years. Present chairperson of the institute, Bhagaban Gantayat said now the only aim of this institute is to increase its quality of education and infrastructure so that it could be declared a deemed university in near future.

Mr Sahu in his speech also expressed that the SMIT is the only institute in south Orissa which has the capacity to become a deemed university.

He declared to provide all possible help to the institute so that it could start research programs in Information Technology and M.Tech courses from next academic year.

Mr. Baral urged the students and faculty of the institution to maintain high academic standards to increase the visibility of the institution in the professional world.
