MADURAI: She always had a passion for Tirukkural. At the tender age of three years, this girl surprised many by reciting all the 1,330 couplets from Tirukkural at a stage appearance in Madurai in 2003 and made her way into the ‘Limca Book of Records’.
Now seven-year-old, M. Lavinashree, studying III standard in a city school, has been chosen for the national award for excellence.
The selection committee for ‘National Child Award Exceptional Achievement – 2006’ has picked the girl for the award .
The award would be given by Minister of Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury in New Delhi on November 14 on the occasion of the Childrens’ Day celebrations.
According to her father, K. Munisamy, the girl had exhibited her prodigious skills at various literary fora.
Among the rewards she received in the recent years included a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each from the Department of Tamil and the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Appreciation from Kalam
Appreciation also came from the then President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, when Lavinashree met him in Madurai. “My daughter has memorised Tirukkural and can recite it without the assistance of a prompter. The national award will encourage her to achieve more laurels,” he said.
