Mr. Venkatachalam has completed a year of dedicated service as the Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation. Even in his early political life he used to visit his wards to alleviate sufferings of the people. During his tenure as the Mayor, he has improved sanitation and drinking water facilities in almost all wards of the city. He planned and implemented the Pilloor second scheme which will be a milestone in his career. He took steps to set up an electric crematorium in K.K. Pudur area. Under the JNNURM scheme, he has been planning to bring underground sewage scheme in all wards and erect an effective and a most modernised plant to eradicate wastes by converting them as manures. By all accounts, he has been trying to convert our city into a ‘Singara Kovai’. P. Devaraj, President, Ramalinga Nagar Residents Welfare Association. Stress on hygieneThe Corporation Council and the Mayor have completed one year in office. I feel that there has been a perceptible qualitative difference all round in the Corporation’s performance. Most of the city roads have been done up. Water supply management has been ably done. The problem which still persists is the inadequate garbage removal arrangement. Many of the city roads, especially the roads in interior areas, continue to remain garbage dumping grounds. I request the Mayor and his team to initiate action to achieve a high standard of hygiene in the city. J. Dasgupta, K.K. Pudur. Building collapseThe collapse of the building of the State Slum Clearance Board at Ukkadam, which killed 13 persons and injured many recently, should be an eye-opener to the Government. The demand of Mr. Subbarayan, MP, to initiate criminal action against contractors and engineers responsible for the collapse is not a remedy. Moreover, since these buildings were constructed 30 years ago, the whereabouts of the contractors and the engineers cannot be ascertained. M.V. Namby, Kovaipudur. Distressed DalitThe Hindu has done a commendable job in prominently highlighting the stark poverty and sad plight of a Dalit woman and her tender children in Salem. The report was heart-breaking. It is hoped that the Government or a social organisation will come to her rescue and extend the urgently-needed help. S. Venkatachalam, Kavundampalayam. School timings Change in school timings to ease traffic congestion may not yield the expected results unless authorities explore some other avenues. They should talk not to the principals but to the managements and impress on them the need to shift their entry points from main roads. All vehicles should be allowed inside the campuses to drop and pick up students. New roads on the banks of Periakulam at Ukkadam connecting Kurichi and Selvapuram may be laid. Stringent action should be initiated against violators of traffic rules. Special buses may be introduced exclusively for school children. N. Krishnaswamy, Jubilee Nagar. .
