Mother, daughter jump in front of running train

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A 30-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of an electric train along with her eight-year-old daughter near Chromepet on Saturday evening.

Government Railway Police at Tambaram said Kalaiarasi held her daughter Rupa in her arms and flung herself in front of the speeding electric train, plying between Chennai Beach and Tirumalpur, around 7 p.m. The two of them were killed on the spot. Police said family problems had forced the woman to the extreme step.

Note

The woman left behind a note stating none was responsible for her death or her daughter’s.

After coming to know about the incident, Subramani, husband of Kalaiarasi, also attempted suicide by consuming an overdose of sleeping pills.

He is being treated in a private hospital in Nanganallur.

The couple belonged to Tirunelveli district and lived in Tiruttani Nagar, Pallavaram. Subramani was employed with the Vadapalani Depot of Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

Enquiries revealed that the couple had bought a new cycle for Rupa, who fell down from it a week ago.

Concealed the injury

The mother and daughter concealed the injury from Subramanian, who came to know of it on Saturday.

The couple had quarrelled with each other, police said, adding it had prompted the woman to the extreme step.
