BJP State president L. Ganesan addressing party district presidents and senior office-bearers at a meeting in Karur on Sunday. KARUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) foresees general elections within a year and is gearing itself for the polls, party State president L. Ganesan said here on Sunday. Addressing mediapersons on the sidelines of the meeting of district party presidents and senior State office-bearers here, Mr. Ganesan said the Congress and the Left had not reconciled their differences over the nuclear deal and that might worsen the situation for the ruling party at the Centre. Those and the related factors could hasten the general elections in the country. The Karur meeting was part of the strategy to galvanise district office-bearers. Mr. Ganesan said that at the national level the alliances would revolve around his party and the Congress, adding that there was no scope for a ‘Third Front.’ He hastened to add that it would be hard to tell, at present, which parties would be in the BJP alliance. Claiming that the “situation was worsening in Tamil Nadu,” Mr.Ganesan alleged that arms were being smuggled to the neighbouring states. “Uneasy relationship”After Tamil Nadu Chief Minister eulogised slain LTTE leader S.P. Thamilselvan, there existed an uneasy relationship between the Central and the State governments. Allegations by the Opposition on the involvement of ruling partymen in smuggling of ration rice to other States had been proved with the recent seizures in Puducherry. Demo planned The BJP had demanded the State Government to announce a minimum support price of Rs. 1,000 for a quintal of paddy to benefit farmers. But the Chief Minister had not responded so far. To reiterate the demand, the BJP planned to stage demonstrations in eight places across the State on Tuesday, Mr. Ganesan added. On the formation of Ariyalur district, Mr. Ganesan said the BJP was in favour of setting up a districts reorganisation committee to rationalise the formation of new districts based on uniform administrative conveniences. It was surprising that the DMK’s ally, Pattali Makkal Katchi, was silent on the reorganisation of Vellore district that had 11 legislative constituencies in its jurisdiction while the proposed Ariyalur district would have just three constituencies, Mr. Ganesan said. On his party assuming power in Karnataka, Mr. Ganesan hoped that the Cauvery issue would be resolved in an amicable manner during its regime. Talks, not courts or struggles, would help resolve the tangle and the BJP coming to power in Karnataka presented a good opportunity to find a lasting solution, Mr. Ganesan said.
