The two shelters were built at the cost of Rs. 26 lakh TASMAC outlet near the Eastern bus shelter poses problems TAMBARAM: Emphasising the need to improve hygiene at bus shelters at Pallavaram, members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), organised a mass signature campaign on Saturday. Members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association, Democratic Youth Federation of India and Students Federation of India took part. The members recalled that the two bus shelters in the area were built at a cost of Rs. 26 lakh by the Pallavaram Municipality during the AIADMK’s regime. The need for a public convenience near the bus shelters was emphasised at the campaign. The TASMAC outlet near the Eastern bus shelter posed problems, they said. Customers caused embarrassment not only to commuters, particularly women, but also to residents living nearby. Besides, public property was taken over by some private companies and converted into parking lots for cycles and motorcycles, the added. Waste water from restaurants located nearby also found their way to the bus shelters, they pointed out. Urging the Pallavaram Municipality, the State Highways Department and other government agencies to pay greater attention to sanitation and hygiene, the CPI (M) members said they would resort to a series of protests unless there was some improvement. The party members obtained signatures from commuters travelling by buses, those waiting at bus shelters, traders, petty shop owners and pavement vendors. They said Pallavaram was a junction where people from many interior pockets arrived before proceeding to different places in the city. Among those who took part in the signature included P. Jeeva, B. Kumar and B.T. Ranadive, members of CPI (M). Over 3,000 signatures were collected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
