Armistice Day observed

Remembering the warriors: In memory of Consul-General of France in Puducherry Joelle Rayet and Health Secretary T. M. Balakrishnan at the statue of the Unkown Soldier on the occasion of the 89th Armistice Day on Sunday. —

PUDUCHERRY: The 89th Armistice Day, marking the end of the First World War in 1918, was observed here on Sunday. French Consul-General in Puducherry Joelle Rayet and Health Secretary T.M. Balakrishnan placed wreaths at the War Memorial (Monument aux Morts), the statue of the Unknown Soldier, on Goubert Avenue.

Members of Advisory Superior Council for French People Living Abroad, Vajoumouny Shankar and Ramatchandrane Tirou, paid tributes. Members of the managing committee of the Foyer du Soldat, Antony Antoine and Bernard Boubady, were present. A large number of people, paid tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives in the war.

M. Henri Durieux, the then Consul General of France in Puducherry, unveiled the plaque on November 11, 1971.

The Armistice Day commemorates the peace treaty signed between the Allies and Germany.
