Party wants faster implementation of Sethu project
MADURAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the State Government to immediately begin work on setting up of a textile park at Vadipatti.
The resolution, passed at the party’s Madurai urban district conference held here on Sunday, said the project, which was expected to create jobs for many, had not made any headway after the foundation was laid. The conference also sought uninterrupted power supply for the industries.
The two-day meeting began with State secretary N. Varadarajan and other leaders garlanding the statue of Communist veteran P. Ramamurthy.
Another resolution wanted expeditious completion of Ellis Nagar and Sellur road overbridges and construction of new bridges across the Vaigai and road overbridges to ease traffic congestion. The party also demanded that the Sethusamudram project be executed expeditiously; foreign companies be prevented entering retail trade and more power be devolved to the Madurai Corporation with additional funds for carrying out development works.
The meeting wanted ration cards distributed at the earliest to all those who applied and grains sold in packets to ensure correct quantity in fair price shops.
Laying underground electricity cables, expeditious clearance of applications for old age pension and assistance for widows and destitute, disabled and mentally challenged were the other demands. Madurai MP P. Mohan, Madurai East MLA N. Nanmaran and party urban district secretary R. Jothiram were present.
