“Ban rallies, public meetings condoling Thamilchelvan’s death”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State Government should not allow any political party to organise rallies or conduct public meetings in the State to condole the death of Liberation Tigers Tamil Eelam political division chief Thamilchelvan, Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan has said.

He was speaking at a meeting organised by the party to celebrate the birth anniversary of Congress leader Maragatham Chandrasekar here on Sunday.

Groups indirectly mobilising support for the banned group in Tamil Nadu should not be encouraged, the Minister said. Mr. Elangovan said it was unfortunate that even people at top positions were issuing condolence messages, which were being released officially. Congress workers could not remain silent when functions were arranged to glorify a banned organisation which was behind the assassination of their leader Rajiv Gandhi.

The party had every right to question the delay in taking action against those involved in the attack of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy, he said.

The Minister said the death of Maragatham Chandrasekar had created a vacuum, as she acted as a bridge between the AICC and the State unit of the party.
