Possibilities of selling wind energy being explored

COIMBATORE: The Indian Wind Power Association is exploring possibilities for its members in the State to sell untapped and surplus wind energy to the States that need power.
In this regard, it organised a meeting here recently with the Tata Power Trading Company. K. Kasthurirangaian, vice-president of the association, told The Hindu that the State had nearly 3,600 MW of installed capacity for wind energy generation. In the last season of 2007 about 2500 MW was generated from these mills.
Only Coimbatore District had adequate facilities to evacuate fully the wind energy generated. In the southern districts, part of the energy that could be generated was going untapped. “Infrastructure needs to be improved immediately, especially in the areas where there are bottlenecks,” he said. Only then could the surplus power be evacuated to the deficient regions. The association could act as a facilitator and organise meetings. Individual investors could decide whether they wanted to sell the power to areas outside the State.
At the meeting, the company had asked for data from windmill owners. Now, details such as what links were needed, and the needs of other States that wanted power would be studied.
