“Ask the Centre to fix paddy MSP at Rs. 1,000 a quintal” “Seek Central funds to help sick mills” PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has urged the Congress Government to provide reservation for the minorities in education and employment. A resolution adopted at a meeting of the party’s executive committee here on Saturday asked the Territorial Government to announce the quota for the minorities as it had been done by the Tamil Nadu Government. The meeting urged the government to ask the Centre to fix the support price for paddy at Rs. 1,000 a quintal in the interest of farmers. The party called for immediate steps to implement the Chief Minister’s announcement on waiver of cooperative farm loan. It also urged the government to come forward to waive farm loan disbursed by the nationalised banks. It urged the government to initiate legal steps to withdraw the election-related cases in the Union Territory. Recalling the Chief Minister’s announcement in the Assembly that those who participated in the language agitation would be provided a monthly pension of Rs. 4,000, the DMK unit urged the government to immediately issue a Government Order in this regard. The executive of the local DMK unit said that the three textile mills in Puducherry — Anglo-French Textiles, Swadeshi and Bharathi — had become sick, owing to funds crunch. This had created apprehensions among the mill workers about their future. The party urged the government to take measures on a war-footing to seek financial assistance from the Centre and ensure that the mills functioned to their normal capacity. It also called for steps to concede all the just demands of the mill workers. The executive called upon the party activists to make sincere efforts to publicise the conference of the DMK youth wing slated for December 15 and 16 in Tirunelveli. Convener of the Puducherry DMK unit R.V. Janakiraman and chairman of the council of presidium P. Subbarayan participated in the executive meeting.
