Gruesome assault: Tamil Nadu Youth Congress president Mayura Jayakumar being taken to hospital from Sathyamurthi Bhavan in Chennai on Sunday. CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Youth Congress president Mayura Jayakumar was injured when he was attacked by a 10-member gang at the party headquarters, Satyamurthi Bhavan, here on Sunday. Along with him, two Youth Congress volunteers were attacked. All the three were admitted to a private hospital in the city. The group also ransacked the Youth Congress office. The Triplicane police have registered a case. The attack took place on the first floor. On the second floor, party MLAs were discussing the law and order situation in the State in the wake of the attack on Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy in Ramanathapuram district recently. The gang, according to eyewitnesses, barged into Mr. Jayakumar’s room when he was in discussion with party members. While one gang member attacked Mr. Jayakumar with an “aruval,” others prevented party volunteers from coming to his rescue. Two party workers, who rushed to protect Mr. Jayakumar, suffered injuries. News photographers who rushed in from the second floor were chased away. The gang later fled in a car. Police officials led by Commissioner Nanchil G. Kumaran inspected the place of attack.
