Chennai boys win Jack Kilby quiz

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Why is it that a “chapatti” left out in the open turns hard, while biscuits tend to get soggy? From biscuits to agarbathis…the TI Jack Kilby Science and Technology Quiz 2007 attempts to make quizzers think on their feet, instead of rattling away answers from quiz books and manuals.

In what was a nail-biting finish, the bright duo from Vidya Mandir, Chennai, took home the annual trophy, while the home team from St. Kumaran’s, Bangalore, came second. The quiz is organised by Texas Instruments, a multi-national company in Bangalore. The winners took home prizes worth Rs. 1 lakh, including a Mac Book.

The winning team, comprising Aaslesh Yerrapatni and Jayadev Bhaskaran, was thrilled to win the Mac.

The team made a costly mistake in the buzzer round, which they made up for in the tie-breaker round. We were very lucky, they chorused.

The team from Bangalore received a lot of ground support, with the audience cheering them on at every step. “When the quizmaster said that we still had a chance, a few in the crowd booed, and that just made me fight back. The quiz is the best in the country and to win it is an honour,” said Aaslesh, who was already wondering how he will take the Mac back home. The team from Bangalore that cleared the regionals was clearly the popular team with the audience. They also won the audience’s hearts with their comeback spirit. “When the other teams were at 65, we were stuck at five. We had to fight back and this is not an easy quiz. It makes you think on your toes,” said Mayank Kaushik, from the team which came in second. This national-level quiz had teams from Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore battling for the first prize.

“The quiz is structured in a way that you cannot win it by memorising,” said Bobby Mitra, managing director of Texas Instruments.

Quizmaster Ochintya Sharma had the audience on its toes. .
