Machinery to be set up at Brahmapuram in December

KOCHI: Installation of machinery for the solid-waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram will begin in December, as a major portion of the structural work has been completed.

The roofing work will start shortly, said an official in charge of the project.

The city Corporation has been reviewing the progress of the project every Thursday and the work is progressing steadily, Mayor Mercy Williams said.

Flooring work has started and works related to piling and pile cap has been almost completed. Once the flooring is ready, the crucial work of erecting and installing machinery will begin. Going by the present pace of the work, the plant installation can begin in December, project engineer of the Corporation said.

The Corporation has set a February 20 deadline for the completion of the plant. Though the work normally requires about 14 months, efforts are being made to get the plant ready much before that. The workforce is being deployed in such a way that the plant can be completed within half the usual time required. The work starts around 8 a.m. and goes on till 9 p.m. every day, an official said.

Civic officials are preparing a project report for the plastic recycling plant to come up on the site.

The recycling plant has been conceived for the second stage of the project. An estimated Rs. 7 crore will have to be spend on it. The project report will be submitted to the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for financial support.
