KOCHI: The judiciary must ensure priority to social justice while deciding cases, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said here on Sunday. “Literal interpretation of statutes must not be at the cost of social justice,” he said at the enrolment of 447 law graduates as advocates. “Very often, the poor and the downtrodden do not get justice, owing to a lot of reasons. The courts should be more proactive when it comes to deciding on issues concerning women and the environment.” Dr. Isaac said more attention would be given to ensure the welfare of advocates, including juniors. Good turnoutP.G. Thampy, chairman of the Bar Council of Kerala, presided over the function, which saw a huge turnout of family members and friends of those enrolled. A father and daughter were among the enrolled. They are Rajasekharan Nair, a retired tahsildar from Thiruvananthapuram, and Athira. Both had studied at the Kerala Law Academy Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.
