One killed in septic tank collapse

Thiruvananthapuram: A former panchayat member was killed and 10 other sustained minor injuries when the concrete slab of a septic tank collapsed at Kattayikonam in the Pothencode police station limits on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as Sadanandan, 82, a former CPI panchayat member and resident of Pongumood Veedu, Udayapuram, near Kattayikonam in the suburbs. Those who sustained injuries were Soman, Sukumaran, Sasi, Pankajakshan, Damodaran, Unni, Appukuttan, Kamalasananan, Adarsh, and Vijayakumar. The accident took place when they were attending the funeral rites of one Apukuttan. The concrete slab on which they were standing collapsed, trapping all the 11 persons in the15-foot-deep tank. They were later rescued and rushed to hospitals by the local people and fire force personnel. The concrete slab collapsed under weight, fire force authorities said. The police have shifted the body of Sadanandan to the mortuary at the medical college hospital. The police have registered a case in this regard.
