The Orissa pavilion at upcoming trade fair in the Capital holds promise

NEW DELHI: The coastal State of Orissa is pulling out all stops to ensure that its pavilion at the upcoming India International Trade Fair is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes of visitors.

The State has installed two artistically designed boats that are replicas of the ancient jumbo boats once used for marine trade with Java and Sumatra, which are now part of Indonesia.

According to Sasanka Sekhar Panda, Joint Director in the Public Relations Department of the Orissa Government, the theme of IITF this year being “Processing Food and Agro Industries”, Orissa will display a wide variety of the traditional “patta” paintings that will depict sowing and harvesting of traditional crops.

“Patta paintings are made on palm leaves with traditional natural colours,” said a senior designer from the State.

Also on display will be Orissa tussar, silver filigree ornaments from Cuttack and appliqué works. Tribal jewelleries that are appreciated and sold across the country and even overseas will also be showcased in a big way. The famous Sambhalpuri saris will also be available at the fortnight-long fair.

There will also be a glimpse of the Chilka Lake that is an important habitat and breeding ground for both resident and migratory birds, most notably flamingos. “Chilka Lake recently won the Ramsar International Award for lake conservation,” said an official.

Besides the lake, ancient temples and Buddhist statues in the State will also be highlighted to woo both domestic and foreign tourists.
