GRAND EVENT: Finalists at the regional-level The Hindu Young World quiz competition in Madurai on Monday. The quiz master V.V. Ramanan is also seen.
MADURAI: In an enclosed space with the lights growing dim, the young faces shone bright with curiosity levels reaching a high. The enthusiasm was palpable at the Lakshmi Sundaram Hall here on an unusually sombre Monday morning. Yes it was The Hindu Young World Quiz, which witnessed a tussle among sharper minds all through the day. The atmosphere at the auditorium was electrifying with three large screens, kept for the audience to view from various angles, beaming questions and answers. One could hardly miss the body language of the kids. The quiz conducted for middle level classes was a mélange of history, geography, culture and politics with fascinating questions. The ultimate battle between the six teams selected for the final round was a bit of a mixed bag, which saw the preliminary round winners coming back from a stalemate and emerging on top. The 60-minute combat, with interesting sets of questions, made the crowd focussed. The questions thrown both to the contestants and audience were witness to wizardry as the kids came up with some really amazing answers, which would have made any quiz master proud. In fact, it did make V. V. Ramanan, the quiz master, proud. The audience too had glimpses of hilarious moments as children came up with interesting answers. The first round saw St Joseph’s Matriculation School have a slender lead but the second and third rounds were interesting. Questions generally considered tough were answered well by the VMJ Matriculation Higher Secondary School team that ultimately walked away with the winner’s prize. An eternal thirst for knowledge made them go through a wide range of books, magazines and newspapers. Whatever interesting fact they came across they had the habit of storing it for the big event called The Hindu Young World Quiz – 2007. This is the most important reason behind the victory of V.N. Vignesh Shantham and V. Anirudh Kumaran of VMJ Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai. The chief guest was the chess wizard of Madurai, Grandmaster Deepan Chakravarthy, who distributed the trophies to winners, runners and other participants. The winners walked away with a wide range of gifts and gift hampers from the sponsors.Amity University was the national title sponsor for the competition. Tara Talcum powder and Lotte Booproo were the associate sponsors. The other sponsors at the national level were GM Pens, Penguin, Encyclopaedia Britannica, State Bank of Travancore, Cycle Brand Agarbathis, Vizag Steel Plant, Tourism Malaysia and Extramarks.com. Dabur-Real Mango is the beverage sponsor. The event managers were Quizwalahs. The regional sponsors are Life Insurance Corporation of India, RAMCO, Hi-Tech Arai and Blue Hills.
