Farmers complain of fertilizer shortage

Staff Reporter

UDUMALPET: Farmers in Udumalpet and Palladam taluks were facing shortage in fertilizers, said S. R. Madhusoothanan, All India Kisan Sabha Coimbatore district east unit secretary. It is very difficult to get diammonium phosphate and ammonium sulphate even if farmers are willing to pay higher prices. It will adversely affect the cultivation of maize and paddy, he said. Maize, an important ingredient in cattle feed, is in the flowering stage and shortage of fertilizers would affect its harvest.

A. Baladhandapani, president of Marulpatty Water Users’ Association, said that the fertilizer price has been sky rocketing in the region. He said that the administration did not take proper action to ensure availability of fertilizers.
