MADURAI: The Institution of Engineers (India) has urged the Prime Minister, the President and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to expedite the interlinking of southern rivers. It said that special priority should be accorded to the project in view of the increased food production and to prevent floods. Resolutions to effect were passed by the Madurai Local Centre of the Institution during its annual general body meeting conducted recently. The National Water Policy of the Union Government formulated in 1980 called for linking Himalayan Rivers with peninsular ones to enable transfer of surplus water to deficit areas. Central Water Development Agency had identified two dozen rivers for interlinking, it said.
