Efforts on to fill vacancies in local bodies, says Stalin

COIMBATORE: The Government is taking steps to tackle the problem of staff shortage in local bodies, Minister for Local Administration M.K. Stalin said here on Monday.

Launching the Coimbatore Corporation’s Rs.377-crore underground drainage scheme to be implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, he said: “This problem is not restricted to my Ministry. Every department in all the other ministries also faces staff shortage. The Government is taking efforts to fill the vacancies.”

Mr. Stalin said he understood the problems lack of adequate staff caused to corporations, municipalities, town panchayats and village panchayats. It was caused by the ban on recruitment, including those on compassionate grounds, imposed by the previous regime.

Conceding that development works suffered, he said: “I know that we have not filled all the vacancies. But we have filled many in the last one-and-a-half years after lifting the ban. I assure you that we will fill all vacancies very soon.”

The Minister handed over appointment orders to 50 persons recruited by the Corporation.

Mr. Stalin said the needs of all local bodies were being examined. Periodical discussions were being held with the heads of the local bodies and the authorities concerned at the Government-level to assess the needs.

Over 12,000 presidents of village panchayats had met him. Their demands had been passed on to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Responding to Coimbatore MP and Communist Party of India leader K. Subbarayan’s plea to waive power bills of panchayats, he said a similar request had been made by the heads of the local bodies. This was placed before the Chief Minister and some reduction in charges effected.

The Government had taken a sympathetic view of problems the local bodies faced from their huge loan burden. Corporations and municipalities had sought waiver of the penal interest. This was also placed before the Chief Minister who issued orders to write off loans to the tune of Rs.760 crore.
