CHENNAI: The University of Madras will soon confer honorary doctorate degrees on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Though the university had planned to honour the three during the 150th convocation held on Monday, it was later decided that they would be conferred the degrees at a separate function, Higher Education Minister and the university’s Pro-Chancellor, K.Ponmudy, said.
The university had seen extramural resource generation, including the opening of various centres of excellence, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said in his convocation address. A total of 474 graduates received their degrees in person.Ten eminent personalities — founder chairman of HCL Technologies Shiv Nadar; statistical scientist C.R. Rao; former Madras High Court judge A.K. Rajan; neurologist C.U. Velmurugendran; educational administrator Umayal Ramanathan; academic M. Santappa; chairman of the Daily Thanthi group of newspapers Sivanthi Adityan; film director K. Balachander; religious leader Santhalinga Ramaswamy Adigalar and linguist V.I. Subramoniam — were conferred honorary doctorates.
State Planning Commission Vice-Chairman M. Naganathan was conferred an ‘earned’ D.Litt degree in economics.
