CHENNAI: Vairamuthu’s works of poetry are marked by their depth and relevance to people’s lives, M. Karunanidhi, Chief Minister, said here on Monday. The Chief Minister said Mr. Vairamuthu was known for his longstanding service to the Tamil film industry through his thoughtful lyrics. He and the poet often interacted with each other on matters concerning poetry, Mr. Karunanidhi said. The Chief Minister was presiding over a function in which Mr. Vairamuthu recited 10 of his poems. A 90-minute musical programme based on the poems was held on the occasion. Mr. Karunanidhi recited a poem written by him keeping Mr. Vairamuthu in mind. Mani Ratnam, film director, said Mr. Vairamuthu’s works had embellished Tamil cinema and taken it to greater heights. Vivek, comedian, said Mr. Vairamuthu covered a wide range of subjects. The musical programme, directed by Iniavan, was performed by a team of singers, including Chitra, Manickavinayagam, S.P.B. Saran, Vijay Yesudoss, Krishnaraj and Saindhavi.
