Off to a start: Indo Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice-chairman M. Ganesh addresses the inaugural function of the German Film Festival in Chennai on Monday. Madras Film Society general secretary S. Mahadevan is in the picture. CHENNAI: A four-day festival of German films, being organised by Max Mueller Bhavan and the Madras Film Society, opened at the Film Chamber Theatre here on Monday. M. Ganesh, vice-chairman of the Indo Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, inaugurated the festival, in which seven films portraying various themes, from industrialisation to unemployment and fact to fiction, are to be screened. The highlight of the German film festival would be the screening of ‘Lost and Found’, a movie directed by six young directors. One of the six directors of the movie is Stefan Arsenijevic, winner of the Golden Bear Award (2003). The movie is to be screened on Thursday. The German Film Festival is being conducted by the Madras Film Society and Max Mueller Bhavan for several decades, and over 625 films have been screened. “The German films have a simple but very good theme and they discover the various aspects of the chosen theme,” Mr. Ganesh said. “When one watches international movies one figures out new themes and forms of expression, but then we realise that some of those thoughts are universal,” said Priya V, Associate Director of ‘Mitr, My Friend’ and the latest Deepavali release ‘Kannamoochi Ennada’. She was a guest of honour at the inauguration, along with the actor Naethra.
