Free COPD testing

PUDUCHERRY: The Department of Pulmonary Medicine of the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences will conduct free Spirometry, a breathing test, to diagnose Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) till November 16.

If you smoke or have smoked in the past, are over the age of 40, have symptoms of cough, sputum production and difficulty in breathing, chances are there that it could be COPD, K. H. Kisku, Associate Professor and Head Department of Pulmonary Medicine, told reporters on Tuesday.

He said the tests were being conducted as part of World COPD Day, which falls on November 14. COPD is also caused by passive smoking and pollution, he added. COPD, Dr Kisku, said it was a life-threatening disease chronic lung disease, which could be treated if diagnosed in the initial stage itself.
