CHENNAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi have demanded immediate, unconditional release of leaders arrested on Monday.
The leaders, including MDMK general secretary Vaiko and Pazha. Nedumaran, coordinator of the movement for supporters of Tamil Eelam, had tried to hold a rally to condole the death of Thamilchelvan, the political division wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
Demonstrations
In a statement, MDMK treasurer M. Kannappan criticised the Chief Minister for the arrests and said those detained had not indulged in any action that affected law and order. The MDMK would hold demonstrations on Wednesday in all district headquarters.
VCK president Thol. Thirumavalvan said as a result of some parties’ opposition, both the rally in Chennai and a condolence meeting for the slain LTTE leader at Vellore slated for Monday were banned.
The VCK was also prohibited from holding a meeting in Madurai on Tuesday.
