BEML (KGF) cruises to seventh win

BANGALORE: BEML (KGF) cruised to its seventh win in nine matches with a 2-0 verdict over Postal in the super division football league at the Football Stadium here on Tuesday.

BEML went into the lead in the 22nd minute through Sanath Kumar and put the issue beyond Postal’s reach with a 89th minute strike by Wilfred.

BEML now has 22 points from nine encounters, while Postal crashed to its fourth defeat in nine outings and has 11 points (three wins and two draws). In the ‘A’ division league earlier, Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) kept its winning streak going with a 4-0 rout of Reserve Bank. RWF has thus gained promotion to the super division next season.

Naveen Babu opened the account in the second minute before Satish (27th), Umashankar (66th) and Thyagarajan (87th) completed the scoring.

Century by Somashekar

K. Somashekar’s unbeaten 112 helped Mysore Zone score 238 for eight in 90 overs against Tumkur Zone in a KSCA under-17 inter-zonal cricket tournament match that commenced here on Tuesday.

In another match, President’s XI scored 325 against Bangalore City and at close on the opening day, Bangalore City was 27 for three in 12 overs.

The scores: Mysore Zone 238 for eight in 90 overs (K. Somashekar 112 not out) vs. Tumkur Zone.

President’s XI 325 in 75.4 overs (Bharath Jain 90, K. Shahindra 76, Karan Singhvi 48, Naresh Reddy 41) vs. Bangalore City 27 for three in 12 overs.

At Shimoga: Shimoga Zone 205 for nine in 90 overs (Manoj 70) vs. Mangalore Zone 20 for no loss in five overs.

At Bhadravati: Combined City XI 252 in 75 overs (D. Suhas 80, Akshay Ballal 72, R. Bhanush 45, Shivam Bajaj five for 85) vs. Bangalore Zone 54 for two in 20 overs.

Win for DRDO

DRDO snatched an extra-time victory over Pattabhiramnagar SC on the opening day of the State Association Cup basketball championship for men and women that commenced at the Sree Kanteerava stadium courts here on Tuesday. DRDO won 48-47 after a slender 24-23 lead at half time and tied 47-all at the end of regulation period.

The tall Abhishek contributed 19 points to his side’s tally and was effective under the boards. Sandeep provided able support with his shooting prowess. Satish and Yashwanth complimented each other for the losers but just could not pull it off.

The match swung either way in the first two quarters (9-15 and 15-8 in favour of DRDO) but was evenly fought in the second session (6-5 and 8-10) being the quarter wise break-up. JSC made a winning start to its campaign with a 65-42 victory over Vimanapura SC, with its second half play being decisive.

The scores: JSC 65 (Charan 21) bt Vimanapura SC 42 (Chetan 17)(Ht: 24-25). DRDO 48 (Abhishek 19, Sandeep 14) bt Pattabhiramnagar SC 47 (Satish 16, Yashwanth 12)(Ht: 24-23; Ft: 47-47).

Mithun triumphs

Mithun Manjunath won the boys under-10 singles title in the Ramesh Padukone memorial inter-school badminton tournament at the Canara Union Courts here on Tuesday. In the final, Mithun defeated Nirmit Kaushik 21-7, 21-14.

Mohd. Ali posts win

There were upsets of sorts at the KSBA Hall here in the ongoing senior billiards and junior snooker second leg matches on Tuesday.

In junior snooker, Mohd. Ali downed Balaji Reddy 4-2, while the senior billiards super league action saw Satish Kumar put it across Duncan Mackenzie 636-613 and B.V.S. Murthy bounce back to win 740-682 over veteran Arvind Savur.

The results: Junior snooker: Second leg: Amit Bhushan bt Manju Kiran 72-18, 62-14, 77-35, 68-25; Mohd. Ali bt Balaji Reddy 52-54, 76-04, 91-51, 54-13, 16-65, 65-31.

Karate championship

Kyokushin- Kan International will conduct a South Asian-level open karate championship at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium here on November 17 and 18.

Teams from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan, besides India will participate in the event.

Badminton tournament

The Bowring Institute will conduct an under-17 inter-high school badminton championship from November 26 to 28.
