MONKEY BUSINESS: One caught but there are many more still at large across the Capital.

NEW DELHI: Hunger pangs finally accomplished what the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had failed to do these past few days as the notorious and now famished Shastri Park simian ventured inside a cage lured by the feed kept there for the very purpose of attracting it early Tuesday morning.

The civic body’s resident monkey-catcher Yusuf promptly clanged the cage door shut as two other functionaries present on the scene breathed a collective sigh of relief. The “catch” put a temporary end to the burgeoning monkey menace that had resulted in injuries to nearly 30 people in the East Delhi area this past week.

An angry mob that had gathered there armed with sticks and stones apparently to avenge injuries to their kith and kin inflicted by the captured monkey was asked to disperse by the local police, who then handed over the cage to the municipal functionaries.

“The monkey was caught around 6-30 in the morning from Rashidiya Masjid area in Shastri Park and taken to Shahadra (North) Zone. Around noon we transported it to the Asola sanctuary as per the directives of the court,” said MCD Veterinary Services Director R. B. S. Tyagi.
