CHIKMAGALUR: M. Nagendra Swamy, director of the Press Information Bureau, has said that the next Public Information Campaign (PIC) will be held at Kadur in Chikmagalur district from December 15 to 19. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Swamy said the Bharat Nirman programme was a major initiative by the Union Government to provide electricity, water supply, housing, roads, telephone connectivity and irrigation to the rural areas of the country by 2009. He said the total investment for the programme was Rs. 1,74,000 crore, of which Rs. 24,603 crore had been allocated in the Budget this year. Flagship programmes include the National Rural Employment Guarantee Schem, the National Rural Health Mission, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the midday meal scheme, the Prime Minister’s 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities and the Right to Information Act. Mr. Swamy said that the programme was intended to bridge the gap in basic facilities between the urban and rural areas of the country. He said the PIC would have exhibitions in which several State and Union government departments that are implementing these projects, public sector undertakings and banks would participate and provide information on the programmes and their achievements. Workshops on various flagship programmes would also be held daily during the campaign, he added.
