IN PROTEST: Members of the Socialist Unity Centre of India staging a demonstration in Bijapur on Tuesday. BIJAPUR: Members of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) staged a demonstration at Gandhi Chowk in Bijapur on Tuesday protesting against the “repression” of public agitation in Nandigram, by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led Government in West Bengal. The SUCI took strong exception to the CPM’s dual policy on Special Economic Zones (SEZ). B. Bhagwan Reddy, district convener of the SUCI, who led the protest, accused the CPM and CPI of pursuing dual policies on economic liberalisation and foreign investment. The Left parties had been giving a red carpet welcome to capitalists in West Bengal and Kerala, but opposing the same in other parts of the country. Because of this, both parties had lost their reputation. They would be defeated in the next elections, he said. The members also condemned the firing incidents in Nandigram. SUCI office-bearers H.T. Bharatkumar, Deepti Devkate and Mallikarjun spoke.
