BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has adjourned a petition for bail by a resident of Bangalore who is accused of being a member of the mob that had torched the Tamil Nadu State Express Corporation bus in Bangalore in September this year, in which two passengers were burnt to death. The Madivala police had on September 21 named 12 persons of the mob. The mob had not only torched the bus but also attacked the J.P. Nagar house of Ms. Selvi, the daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. The mob was reportedly enraged by the comments on Lord Rama by Mr. Karunanidhi. It had first attacked Ms. Selvi’s house and then set fire to the bus. Harish, one of the persons arrested by the Madivala police, had moved the High Court for bail. In the FIR, the Madivala police had said Harish was part of the mob that had intentionally set on fire the bus when it was on Hosur Road. Contests claimContesting the police claim, Harish said he was not involved in the incident and that the police could not have identified him and named him as an accused. He wondered how the police could have identified him in the crowd. Justice Subash B. Adi adjourned further hearing on the case after the Government sought time to procure records relating to the case. Acid attackers finedThe Karnataka High Court on Tuesday allowed an appeal by the State against a Sessions court verdict and fined a mother and daughter from Sulebail in Shimoga district Rs. 1.2 lakh for throwing acid on three strangers. According to the State, Husna Bano and Nazrunissa, both of Sulebail, had on August 25, 1992, thrown acid on Abdul Basin, Kairunnisa and Samiulla Khan, also from Sulebail. Abdul, Kairunnisa and Samiulla were standing in front of the residence of Husna. When they began laughing during the course of a conversation, Husna and Nazrunissa mistook them for miscreants and threw acid. All the three suffered injuries and were treated at a local hospital. SentencedA Magistrate Court had sentenced the mother and daughter to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 500 each. When they appealed against the verdict in the Shimoga District and Sessions court, their sentence was commuted and fine enhanced to Rs. 5,000. A Division Bench led by Justice K. Sreedhar Rao fined the mother and daughter Rs. 60,000 on two counts and ordered that the money be paid to the acid victims.
