Delhi toll tax rates up

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to increase the rates of toll tax for commercial vehicles entering Delhi from other States. The new rates will be implemented within three months and are expected to net over Rs.150 crore in revenue for the civic body

Justifying the increase in rates, Mayor Arti Mehra on Tuesday said the rates had not been increased since 2000 and in the same period the price index had increased by 30 per cent and fuel prices had increased on four or five occasions. “Even the cost of vehicles has almost doubled since then and thus the increase in toll tax rates is inevitable,” she said. MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said there were 86 entry points for collection of toll tax and an automatic toll collection system was being provided at ten collection plazas. “Operations like automatic vehicle classification, ticket printing and monetary transactions will enable a more efficient toll collection from a greater number of vehicles in a shorter period time,” he added.

The revised rates for taxis, tempos, Tata-407s and other goods-carrying commercial vehicle would be Rs.35 instead of the existing Rs.25.

For buses, small trucks and other similar vehicles the rate would go up from Rs.50 to Rs.70. For six-wheeler trucks, the revised rates are Rs.140 instead of the existing Rs.100 while for 10-wheeler trucks the rates would be revised to Rs.280 instead of the present Rs.200. For 14-wheeler trucks, the rate has been increased to Rs.700 from Rs.500.

However, the following vehicles are exempted from the toll tax: ambulances, fire-fighting vehicles, police vehicles, government vehicles with red and amber lights, defence vehicles and hearses.
