Palm oil: Centre files petition

Kochi: The Centre on Tuesday filed a petition before the Kerala High Court seeking to vacate the stay on its order banning import of palm oil through the Kochi port.

Justifying its ban order, the government submitted that the notification banning import was issued on the basis of the Foreign Trade Regulations Act, 1992, pursuant to its policy decision.

Stating that the Centre had the authority to regulate, prohibit and restrict import and export of palm oil, the government submitted that the import of palm oil was prohibited in public interest.

The court directed the police to take action if cognizable offence is reported from the office of the Accountants- General (AGs) in Thiruvananthapuram.

The directive was issued by a Division Bench of Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair and Justice K.P. Balachandran. — PTI
