NEW DELHI: The Centre has floated a global tender to buy up to 3.5 lakh tonnes of wheat from the overseas market to increase its buffer stock.
The State-owned international trading company MMTC Limited has floated the tender on behalf of the government to import wheat that will be delivered in India by February 10, 2008. The bids will close on November 19 and a decision on the tender will be taken by November 24.
As per the tender document, wheat can be delivered from any country subject to quality specifications.
It has also allowed global suppliers to find wheat grown during 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. The maximum quantity of wheat that can be shipped from each port has been mentioned in the tender.
The quantity limit per ship at Mundra port will be 65,000 tonnes, Kakinada 50,000 tonnes and Kandla 45,000 tonnes.
