BERHAMPUR: Volunteers from Puri, Khurda and Kandhamal districts gathered up to interact with volunteers from Ganjam district, who are part of the e-gram pilot project continuing in Ganjam district at a workshop organised in the city on Tuesday.

The workshop was organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) and it was attended by National Service Volunteers and volunteers of the NYK running the IT centers in villages of Ganjam district.

It was also attended by the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern division, Satyabrata Sahu, technical director of the NIC, R.K. Dash.

Mr. Sahu urged the team involved in the e-gram pilot project to innovate the hardware and software so that it could be easily implemented in extreme remote pockets of KBK districts.

The pilot e-gram project is still in its nascent stage in Ganjam district. At present the project has been implemented in 25 villages of the district.

As part of the project community-based small IT centers have been opened up at the villages.

The director of Ganjam unit of NYK Naveen Nayak said the present aim of these small IT centers is popularisation of computer literacy and to disseminate information regarding programs and projects of the district administration.

However, these IT kiosks at villages are yet to get a direct links with the district headquarter. They have been provided special software on CDs, through which they can download various forms for administrative works ranging from application for old age allowance and vehicle driving licenses.

Information about activities of the district administration and developmental projects is also available.

At places where there is internet connection the volunteers are downloading required data from the website of district administration for the village folk.

The volunteers running the rural IT centers are also imparting e-literacy courses to the rural students at a very nominal cost.

The volunteers from other districts were at the workshop to learn from the Ganjam experience as similar projects would also be taken up in other districts of the State in future.
