A theft and its aftermath
The recent break-in and ‘theft’ at the Botany block at the Kariavattom campus of the University of Kerala has brought to focus the state of the ages-old buildings there. Though the buildings themselves may be structurally sound the doors and windows in many a department are not deterrents even to a not-so-committed thief. With many departments, particularly science departments, getting lakhs of rupees worth of assistance from Central agencies including the UGC
and with much of this money getting routed to the purchase of costly scientific equipment, the theft at the Botany block has left the department heads worried. The University has responded by deciding to hire more security staff. Some also want the buildings on the campus to be made more secure.
