A short film that takes you through the growth of an institution

Following a visit to one of the super specialty hospitals in Europe, it was the dream of the late king Sri Chitra Tirunal Balarama Varma to set up a similar speciality care centre for cardiology and neurology in the State capital.

It was the royal family’s gift of a multi-storeyed building in 1973, which laid the foundation for one of the premier scientific institutions, the Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST). A short film on SCTIMST, ‘Health Care: The Road Not Taken,’ was released by Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma at a function here on Tuesday. The founder-director of SCTIMST, Dr. M.S. Valiathan, received the copy of the film. The 15-minutes-long film traces the growth of the institution, which began as a specialty hospital and later developed as a multi-disciplinary health sciences research institute under the visionary leadership of Dr. Valiathan. It showcases some of the innovative technologies that SCTIMST developed and helped transfer to the bio-medical industry, such as the Chitra heart valve and blood bags.
