Expressing ire: Residents of Periya Thottam in 47th ward of the Tirupur Municipality staging a road blockade on Kangeyam Road on Tuesday. — TIRUPUR: Vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear in the eastern parts of Tirupur for more than an hour on Tuesday as angry residents of Periya Thottam in Ward no. 47 staged road blockade protesting against the Municipality for inadequate water supply and poor sanitary condition. Removal of garbageMore than 200 residents blocked the busy Kangeyam Road near the elevated bridge demanding immediate removal of garbage and desilting of storm water drains in their area. Tough timeVehicle users had a tough time to reach their destinations, particularly old bus stand area, as the alternative route Dharapuram Road has already been closed for traffic for construction of a bridge across the Sangilipallam. Sewage mixingThe residents complained that water supplied by the municipality was inadequate. They alleged that sewage was mixing with the drinking water in their area and thus not potable. They also complained that municipal staff had not removed garbage for over two weeks in their locality causing heath hazards to the residents. They withdrew their agitation after an hour, following the intervention by the Municipal chairman, K. Selvaraj. He promised them that their grievances would be addressed by the administration immediately.
