TIRUPUR: Tirupur Municipality has decided to launch a multi-pronged campaign to create awareness on the benefits of Under Ground Drainage (UGD) system. At a recent meeting of the Tirupur Municipal Council many councillors, including former vice-chairman V. Radhakrishnan of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, expressed displeasure over the local body not taking proactive steps to make the infrastructure function. Mr. Radhakrishnan said many residents were not aware of the completion of the project and many others had doubts whether pipes were big enough to carry the drainage. Communist Party of India (Marxist) councillor G. Eswaramurthy complained that the delay in inaugurating the scheme was causing monitory loss to the residents who construct buildings now. “The residents are spending thousands of rupees to create facility at their buildings. It is purely avoidable if the municipality announces when it would be inaugurated,” he asked. Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj said the Government had approved the municipality’s proposal to collect deposit in 10 equal instalments with a six-month gap for each instalment. Connections would be given following payment of the first instalment. Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan said the local body had issued notice to the residents to take connections immediately. “We have deployed our meter readers to distribute applications and collect deposit from the residents. There is some progress,” he added. So far around 700 applicants have paid deposit. Mr. Ashokan said the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited had handed over the facility to the municipality and the latter had to operate the treatment plant besides maintaining pumping stations. He also said the system would start functioning once the municipality gave connection to at least 5,000 households. Former MLA and councillor C. Sivasamy suggested the municipality carry out campaign through local cable television network.
