Ramanathapuram: A fisherman of Rameswaram island was critically injured when the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly opened fire on Tuesday.
A group of four fishermen of Thankatchimadam ventured into the sea on Monday in a mechanised boat.
While fishing off Katchatheevu, a fast craft of the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly opened fire at the boat at around 12.30 am.
Kirupairaj (22) was hit on the left thigh and fainted because of excessive bleeding. Other crew members, Gavaskar, Soosai Anthoni and Roopan, returned to the shore with Kirupairaj.
Doctors at the Government Hospital in Rameswaram, where Kirupairaj was admitted, referred him to the district headquarters hospital in Ramanathapuram. A team of doctors operated upon him and removed the bullet.
“When the patrolling craft approached our boats, we switched on all lights and raised our hands. However, the Sri Lankan Navy personnel fired indiscriminately. Following the shooting, other boats returned to the shore hurriedly,” said a fisherman.
