70-year-old dies of beating; three arrested

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 70-year-old man who was badly beaten up when he intervened to retrieve a cricket ball that his great grandsons had despatched into their neighbours’ house at Dabri here on Sunday has succumbed to his injuries at Safdarjung Hospital here.

Three of the accused have been arrested.

According to the police, the bizarre incident took place on Sunday evening when eight-year-old Jitender and his four-year-old brother Pawan, both sons of Jagannath, were playing a game of cricket near their house.

A big hit landed the ball in their neighbour Mange Lal’s house.

The children requested him to return the ball, but he refused and scolded them instead.

The children then sought the help of their maternal uncle, Amit (20), who lives in the same locality.

When Amit reached Mange Lal’s house, the family members allegedly abused him, leading to an altercation. Mange Lal and his relatives allegedly beat him up.

Amit went back home and returned with his grandfather Shatrughan Singh.

He also tried to resolve the dispute, but Mange Lal, his brother Ved Prakash, nephew Devender and other family members allegedly attacked him with sticks, injuring him seriously.

Shatrughan was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital from where he was referred to Safdarjung Hospital. His condition deteriorated and he was declared dead on Tuesday morning.

Complaint

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West Delhi) Shalini Singh said based on the complaint by Amit, the police registered a case and arrested three of the accused, Mange Lal, Ved Prakash and Devender.

After Shatrughan’s death, the case has been converted to that of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
