THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is near-unanimous agreement among various stakeholders that the undergraduate education system in the State needs a revamp, vice-chairman of the Kerala State Higher Education Council K.N. Panikkar has said. This was evident at discussions that the council had on Monday and Tuesday with representatives of teachers’ organisations, student organisations and representatives of principals and college managements on the draft report of the committee for restructuring undergraduate education and the report submitted by the committee that studied the setting up of college clusters, he said. Dr. Panikkar was participating in a press conference here on Tuesday. The participants, however, had concerns and differences of opinion with the report’s recommendations relating to the method of implementing changes and the extent of changes required. Such concerns were mainly about introducing a total internal evaluation system and the credit and semester system. Many participants pointed out that complaints had been raised by students about the existing system of internal evaluation for postgraduate courses. VacanciesAlso, participants felt that the introduction of the credit and semester system may not be practical due to the large number of unfilled vacancies of teachers in the colleges, Dr. Panikkar said. All the concerns raised by the participants in the discussions would be studied and a final decision on UG restructuring and on college clusters would be taken only after allaying the fears of the stakeholders, Dr. Panikkar added.
