Kochi
Aim is to reduce traffic congestion in the city Plan presentation held for officials KOCHI: The civic administrators have started working on a city mobility plan for tackling traffic load the city may have to face following the implementation of large number of development activities. A presentation on the plan was done before a team of select officials of the Kochi Corporation, Greater Cochin Development Authority and the PWD (Roads) on Monday. Basic conceptThe basic concept is to reduce traffic congestion in the city, Kalamassery and the Thripunithura municipality and 13 village panchayats that come under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. WAPCOS, a New Delhi-based consultant, made a presentation at the meeting. Kochi needs to take into account the traffic pressure that may develop over a period of 25 years. There are a host of development programmes coming up in the city including the Smart City, Vallarpadam Container Transhipment Terminal and the LNG terminal. Once the road project is finalised, a detailed project report will be prepared for obtaining assistance from the mission. However, the civic authorities have asked the consultants to work on a travel route for tourists reaching Kochi to visit places of tourist importance without getting entangled in the city traffic. Second proposalThe second proposal is to create a circular road connecting Chathyath Link Road and the National Highway. Once this connectivity materialises, the circular movement of traffic along SA road, Church Landing Road, Model Road, Chathyath Road and the National Highway would be created reducing the pressure on the city roads, officials pointed out. The presentation made by the consultants was silent on the water transport network. The consultant was also suggested to work on proposals for developing parallel road links for reaching Seaport-Airport Road and the National Highway from the city.
