Bangalore: At a time when few would stop to help someone even cross the road, we come across extraordinary acts of valour by children who have saved lives.

Seven such brave hearts will be presented the Children’s Day Bravery Award 2007 by Governor Rameshwar Thakur. As in the past, the Karnataka State Council for Child Welfare will give away the awards to these children from throughout the State for their acts of bravery.

This year, K.M. Siddaraju, Gagan J. Murthy and Bhoomika J. Murthy, R.G. Ashwin, Sainath Habalkar, P. Shreyas and M. Reddappa will receive the award from the Governor.

K.M. Siddaraju: This 12-year-old boy from Kestu, Kestur hobli, Tumkur district, saved the life of a boy who nearly drowned in a lake. Siddaraju saw his classmates Manjunath and Ranganath drowning in a lake. He quickly used the vine of a creeper, tied a stone at one end and threw it into the lake. Ranganath managed to hold on to it and pulled himself to the bank, while Manjunath, who was unable to reach it, drowned. Siddaraju’s quick thinking helped save Ranganath.

Gagan J. Murthy and Bhoomika J. Murthy: The six-year-old twins from Bangalore saved an 18-month-old child without giving any thought to their own safety. The twins were sitting in their father’s car at the vegetable market in Madivala when they saw two bulls running towards each other. They saw the child lying in their path. The two immediately ran and pulled the child away.

R.G. Ashwin: Sixteen-year-old boy from Bangalore had helped the police catch a gang of robbers. Ashwin and his friend Sharath were attacked by a gang of three men when they were returning home from tuition. The three, who arrived in an autorickshaw, blocked their path and took away Ashwin’s mobile phone and gold chain. They took Sharath with them to Banavara on the outskirts of the city and took away his gold chain, watch and ring before leaving him there. Ashwin noted down the autorickshaw number and informed the police immediately, which helped them arrest the gang.

Sainath Habalkar: The 10-year-old boy from Nanjangud, Mysore district, saved his brother Sagar, aged six. Sainath and his brother were playing near a six-foot deep sump, when his brother fell into it. Sainath, with great difficulty, managed to pull his young brother out of the sump and saved his life.

P. Shreyas: Shreyas, a six-year-old from Hassan, saved his friend Dhwani. Shreyas and his friends Krutharth and Dhwani were playing on a terrace, when Dhwani lost his footing and was about to fall from the parapet. Shreyas, who saw this, immediately caught hold of Dhwani’s hand and screamed for help, while Krutharth went to get help. Shreyas held on tightly to Dhwani until a few people came and pulled him up.

M. Reddappa: Reddappa, a seventh standard student who is also partially visually impaired, saved the life of his friend Kumara. Reddappa and Kumara had gone to fetch water from an open well when Kumara fell into it accidentally. Reddappa quickly threw in a dhoti and pulled Kumara out of the water.

The seven children will be getting their awards at a function organised by the Karnataka State Council for Child Welfare at Bal Bhavan on Wednesday. The Department of Women and Child Development, the Karnataka State Students’ Welfare Fund, and the Department of Public Instruction have congratulated the children for their acts of bravery.
