It is aimed at enhancing quality learning Teachers to be given excellence awards Bangalore: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan – Karnataka is all set to launch “Kalika Andolana” (learning campaign) in the State. The campaign will be taken up in all government schools from November 14 to March 2008. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Vandita Sharma, State Project Director, SSA, said that the campaign was being launched with an objective of enhancing quality learning and achieving universalisation of education. She said that the Karnataka School Quality Assessment Organisation’s (KSQAO) assessment of schools showed that 10 per cent of students in classes two to seven have achieved less than 40 per cent of competencies. Lack of attainment of basic learning competencies, such as reading, writing and arithmetic, would affect the universalisation of good quality learning at various levels. “In view of this, remedial teaching is considered as a mode to strengthen the learning of basic competencies. Teachers of the schools were put through rigorous training, so as to equip them better to handle the remedial classes,” she said. K.P. Hanumantharayappa, Joint Director (Programmes), SSA, said that new posts (Assistant Education Officer) had been created at the cluster level to monitor the campaign. He also said that to motivate the teachers, SSA would be giving away excellence awards amounting to Rs. 2,000 for teachers and an incentive of Rs. 5,000 for schools. SSA would also release Rs. 1,000 to lower primary schools and Rs. 2,000 to higher primary schools for taking up remedial classes.
