THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran has urged political parties to exempt lorries transporting LPG cylinders from hartals. Briefing reporters on the discussions he had with officials of oil companies and distributors here on Tuesday to clear the backlog in distributing LPG cylinders, Mr. Divakaran said that recurring agitations were disrupting the distribution of LPG cylinders in the State. While Indian Oil Company (IOC) had the highest backlog of 9,48,000 cylinders in the State, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPC) had to clear 61,500 cylinders and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPC) 45,000 cylinders. Customers who have completed the normal waiting period of 21 days will get cylinders within 10 days. Clear backlogMr. Divakaran said the companies have been told to clear the backlog in five to 10 days. IOC has been directed to clear the backlog at the earliest. The meeting decided to form district-level coordination committees to monitor the supply of cylinders.
