Bank to sponsor education of poor children

PUDUCHERRY: M. Deepriya walked with her hands open to receive a cheque presented by the State Bank of India as part of its community services banking initiative to mark the Children’s Day celebrations on Wednesday.

As she held the cheque for Rs. 5,000, a look of deep gratitude dawned on the girl’s face. A student of St. Joseph of Cluny School, Deepriya lost her father and is being supported by her mother, Devaki, who works at Cluny Hospital.

The bank has adopted the child, and will bear all her educational expenses for her entire schooling period on the condition that she maintains her grades. She studies well and always gets an A Grade.

Assistant General Manager R. Sundar said the bank had introduced the scheme for the adoption of poor children who fared well academically, especially girls.

Chief Manager (Small and Medium Enterprises) P. Seshadri distributed prizes to winners of a painting competition held at the bank in connection with Children’s Day.

A similar function was held at the Agricultural Development Branch in Brindavanam where M. Rajendran, Regional Manager, Regional Branch Office, said the scheme was implemented all over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on November 14. He also said some branches had written to the head office seeking to extend the scheme to more children.

The Agricultural Development Branch Manager R. Balaveni, Siruthozhil Branch Manager Cheenu Bhaskar and Thattanchavay Branch Manager Arulmani were present on the occasion.

The children adopted under the scheme by these three branches are Punyalakshmi of Blessed Mother Theresa School, Shyamaladevi of Savairayalu Naickar Government School and Sangeetha of Thyagaoli School for Destitute Children.

Indian Bank scheme

The lead district bank, Indian Bank, launched a new product called ‘IB Smart Kid A/C’ for students, as part of the Children’s Day celebrations. The scheme was launched at Veda High School, Kottakuppam. Any child up to the age of 18 can open an account under the scheme.

The bank provides ATM cards for children 12 years and above.

The minimum balance for the account is Rs. 100.
